Fool Volume, shot across Mumbai, London and New York after Das lost his voice days before filming, is now nominated for Comedy at the 2026 International Emmys.
Vir Das lost his voice a few days before he was due to shoot his new Netflix special. He didn't push the shoot. He rewrote the whole thing in silence instead, and ended up performing a large chunk of it without rehearsal. That special, Vir Das: Fool Volume, is now nominated for Comedy at the 2026 International Emmy Awards.
The nominations were announced on September 23 by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, one of 64 spread across 16 categories and 22 countries this year, according to DNA India and Free Press Journal. For Das, it's the third International Emmy nomination of his career, which trade reports say makes him the first Indian performer to get three nods for comedy specials.
His first came in 2021, for Vir Das: For India. Two years later he won the Comedy award outright for Vir Das: Landing, becoming the first Indian comedian to take home that trophy. He also hosted the International Emmys in 2024, the first Indian to do so, per Koimoi.
Silence became the subject
Fool Volume was shot across Mumbai, London and New York, and the voice loss that nearly derailed it ended up shaping the show. Das built the special around silence itself, what it costs to lose a voice and what happens when you finally get to use it again, touching on self-doubt and uncertainty before landing somewhere lighter.
Das posted the nomination news on Instagram with a one-liner that's very on brand: "Ummmmm. An International Emmy Nomination. Our third for India. This fool thanks you." Zoya Akhtar, Bhumi Pednekar, Suhail Nayyar and Sheeba Chadha showed up in the comments to congratulate him.
He went further in a statement carried by Koimoi. "Every few years, Netflix and I find a new reason to get together and make something slightly foolish… I mean, funny," he said, before getting a bit more sincere about it. "Fool Volume is about silence — what it means to have a voice, and what happens when you actually use it." He credited the jury, his team, Netflix and, in his words, everyone whose delusion he's apparently made contagious.
Das isn't sitting still while the nomination plays out. He's currently on the road with his stand-up tour I Say We Run, which opened at London's Royal Albert Hall and has stops in Dubai before it lands at New York's Radio City Music Hall on January 30, 2027. He's also just wrapped shooting on Baara Number, his horror directorial.
The International Emmy ceremony itself is scheduled for November 23 in New York. Das will find out then whether Fool Volume gets him back on the winning side of the category he already owns once.
