Ashutosh Gowariker is reportedly developing Lalkaar, inspired by cricketer Lala Amarnath, twenty-five years after Lagaan first paired him with Aamir Khan.
Aamir Khan hasn't signed anything new. Not a single dotted line, according to a Free Press Journal report citing people close to the actor, even as speculation swirls about his next move.
The actor, coming off a stretch of films that haven't quite landed with audiences, is said to be in no rush. He wants to be fully convinced before he commits, the report says, which tracks with a career built on picking projects slowly and deliberately rather than chasing volume.
But two of his oldest collaborators aren't waiting around. Ashutosh Gowariker, who directed Aamir in Lagaan back in 2001, is reportedly working on a film called Lalkaar, said to be inspired by the life of legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath. If it comes together with Aamir attached, it would reunite the two twenty-five years after Lagaan turned into a genuine cultural moment and an Oscar nominee for India.
Separately, Rajkumar Hirani, the man behind 3 Idiots and PK, is reportedly trying to crack a script with his longtime writing partner Abhijat Joshi that could work for the 61-year-old actor. No title, no plot details, nothing concrete yet. Just two people who've made hits with Aamir before, apparently trying to make one more.
None of this is confirmed by Aamir himself or by either filmmaker. The Free Press Journal report frames both as projects being developed with the actor in mind, not deals that are close to closing. So take the Lalkaar buzz and the Hirani chatter for what it is right now, early-stage development, not an announcement.
Still, the timing matters. Fans online have been asking when Aamir will get back to a steadier release rhythm after a decade of long gaps between films, and the idea of Gowariker and Hirani both circling him at once is the kind of thing that gets people talking. Both filmmakers have delivered some of his biggest commercial and critical wins. A reunion with either would be a story in itself, let alone both.
For now, Aamir remains uncommitted. Whether Lalkaar gets a formal announcement, whether Hirani and Joshi actually finish a script he wants to do, and whether either film even lands a release date, all of that is still ahead. The only certainty right now is that nothing has been signed.
