Akshay Kumar turned 59 on Wednesday, and instead of a straightforward birthday message, he used the day to talk up his next release. Haiwaan opens in theatres on September 11, just two days later, and the actor built his entire post around it rather than the milestone itself.
The note, shared on social media, read that what looks evil may not always be evil, and what looks good may not always be good, something he said the film had taught him. He thanked fans for years of support and promised them "a side of me you haven't seen before" once Haiwaan opens this Friday.
The film reunites him with Saif Ali Khan, marketed under a Hero Vs Haiwaan tag, and marks the two actors sharing a frame again after years apart on screen. Directed by Priyadarshan, it's pitched as a dark psychological thriller, a fairly sharp turn for a filmmaker better known for comedies and family dramas across Malayalam and Hindi cinema. The supporting cast includes Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar.
Akshay had already set up the character when the teaser dropped last month. He described the role as evil without any qualification, no grey areas at all, and said he'd wanted to play a psychopath on screen for a long time. Coming off a run of films where he's swung between comedy, horror, action and drama, he called this his first real attempt at playing someone entirely without redemption.
