A Bond The Public Believed In
Until this week, Ambika and Radha were held up as one of Malayalam cinema's rare success stories, two real sisters who both made it big on screen through the 1980s and beyond. That image is now in pieces, playing out not in interviews with a friendly trade outlet but in dueling public statements.
The Note That Went Viral
As the accusations spread, an old post by Facebook user Rafeela Nizar Ahammed resurfaced and started circulating widely. It paints a lopsided picture of the sisters' affection, claiming Ambika always spoke fondly of Radha in public but that Radha rarely, if ever, returned the sentiment. That's one person's reading of a private relationship, not a verified account, but it's clearly resonated with people who grew up on their films.
The note traces Ambika's start in cinema to her teenage years, saying she stepped into films out of necessity rather than choice, to keep the family from going hungry while other girls her age were still in school. At the height of her career, the note claims, Ambika was earning more than Mohanlal, and points to Rajavinte Makan as an example. It also credits Ambika's stardom with opening doors for Radha, whose own early career leaned on being known as Ambika's sister.
Things stayed calm between the two, according to the note, until their mother died. That loss, it suggests, is where the trouble started, since the family's assets were apparently never formally divided through a lawyer beforehand. The note doesn't spell out what happened to the property after that, but the implication is hard to miss given what's now surfaced in public.
Two Marriages, Two Endings
Ambika's personal life away from this dispute has had its own share of upheaval. She married NRI businessman Premkumar Menon at 26 and settled with him in the United States, before the couple split in 1996 over unspecified differences. She married again in 2000, to Tamil actor Ravikanth, and that marriage ended by mutual consent in 2002. From her first marriage she has two sons, Ram Keshav and Rishi Keshav, whom she raised largely on her own while returning to acting to support them.
She now lives in Chennai with her sons and keeps working steadily, mostly in mother roles across film and television.
What happens between the sisters next isn't clear. Neither Ambika nor Radha has said whether the cheque allegation will go any further than the press conferences, or whether the two plan to sort out the property dispute that appears to sit underneath all of it.
