The singer says he has never watched the show before, but Qazi's stint inside the house has changed that, reviving a friendship that goes back two decades.
Arijit Singh doesn't watch Bigg Boss. He said as much on X on Tuesday, then immediately said he's about to break that streak.
The reason is Qazi Touqeer, who's currently inside the Bigg Boss 20 house and has become one of its more talked-about faces this early into the season. "I will have to watch BIG BOSS for the first time in my life cz Apna Rockstar QAZI hai udhar," Arijit wrote, referencing Qazi's now-viral line inside the house: "I'm a Rockstar baby, aau!"
The two go back to 2005, when both competed on the reality show Fame Gurukul, well before either of them became a household name. Arijit went on to become the voice behind half the Bollywood soundtrack of the last decade. Qazi's path took more detours, and Bigg Boss is clearly one of them.
Since the season kicked off, Qazi has been getting attention less for gameplay and more for personality. His catchphrase has been clipped, shared and repeated across social media, and clips of his antics inside the house are doing rounds well beyond the show's usual audience. That a artist of Arijit's stature is publicly cheering him on only adds to that momentum.
Bigg Boss 20 has a fairly stacked lineup this time around. Alongside Qazi, the house includes Kanika Mann, Aasif Khan, Mary Kom, Isha Rikhi, Rhiti Tiwari, Amrapali Dubey, Love Gill, Harsh Machare (Yung DSA), Tanmay Singh (ScoutOP), Arishfa Khan, Kushal Tanwar (Gullu), Aman Gandhi and Uditi Singh. Salman Khan is back to host, and the season is running under the theme 'Tathastu', which gives contestants two separate shots at surviving eviction instead of one.
Whether Arijit actually sits through a full episode remains to be seen. Playback singers dropping into reality TV commentary is rare enough that even a single tweet gets treated as an event, and this one has already travelled. Qazi, for his part, will have to now contend with the extra scrutiny that comes with a famous friend watching from outside.
For now, it's just a tweet and a catchphrase doing the talking. What happens if Qazi actually makes a serious run at the trophy, and whether Arijit keeps his word and tunes in for more than one episode, is the part nobody's answered yet.
