The singer, who has largely stayed off reality television, says his Fame Gurukul co-contestant's presence in the house is reason enough to finally tune in.
Qazi Touqeer has barely been inside the Bigg Boss 20 house a few weeks and he's already the contestant everyone's clipping and reposting. His line, "I'm a Rockstar baby, aau!", has turned into a running gag online, and it's pulled in support from a name that rarely engages with the show at all: Arijit Singh.
On September 9, Arijit posted on X that Qazi's stint had given him a reason to watch the show for the first time in his life. "I will have to watch BIG BOSS for the first time in my life cz Apna Rockstar QAZI hai udhar," he wrote. Simple line. It travelled fast.
The two go back to 2005, to Fame Gurukul, the reality singing show that first put both their names out there. Two decades on, one's a Grammy-adjacent playback fixture who mostly avoids the noise of prime-time television, and the other's competing for a very different kind of trophy inside a house wired with cameras. Arijit choosing to break his own pattern for Qazi says something about how far that friendship has held.
Qazi's run inside the house hasn't been friction-free, though. Bollywood Hungama reported that fellow contestant Yung DSA, real name Harsh Machare, lost his cool after Qazi mimicked him, with the rapper saying his parents had told him not to entertain people like that. Reality television being what it is, the mimicry and the blowback are probably good for both their game.
The season itself has come in with a fresh format. Salman Khan is back hosting, and the theme this year, 'Tathastu', gives contestants two separate chances to survive eviction rather than one straight shot out the door. The house is packed too, Kanika Mann, Mary Kom, Amrapali Dubey, Isha Rikhi, Aasif Khan, Arishfa Khan and a clutch of digital-first names like ScoutOP and Yung DSA among them, all fighting for airtime in a season that clearly isn't short on personalities.
What happens next for Qazi depends on how the house votes and how the audience keeps reacting to him, and that's still very much in motion. But Arijit's post has already done something the show's own promos couldn't: it's pulled in a viewer who otherwise wouldn't have bothered. Whether he actually sits through an episode remains to be seen. Whether Qazi survives the next nomination round is the more pressing question, and Bigg Boss doesn't wait long to answer those.
