Bipasha Basu is working again. According to a Mid-Day report cited by Bollywood Hungama, the actor started filming last month in Mumbai for Hansal Mehta's upcoming series Barabanki, marking her first acting gig since the 2020 OTT thriller Dangerous and her first feature-adjacent project since Alone released in 2015.

That's an eleven-year gap from her last theatrical release. She stepped back further after her daughter Devi was born in 2022, and this is being framed, fairly, as a genuine comeback rather than a one-off cameo.

Barabanki is set in 1984 and draws from retired IPS officer Aloke Lal's book on dismantling a major opium cartel in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district. Lal spent 37 years in service before retiring as DGP, and his record includes operations against armed bandits in Shahjahanpur and counter-militancy work in Uttarakhand. He's also co-written a separate book on burglary investigations. The show is described as told from the vantage point of the officer and his team as they go after a cartel with real political muscle behind it.

A director on her list

What makes this pairing interesting is that Mehta was reportedly on Bipasha's own wishlist of filmmakers, and the report suggests she signed on soon after he approached her, which tracks given how selective she's been about work since 2015. This is also her first project with Mehta, a director whose recent run, from Scoop to Scam franchises, has leaned hard into procedural, true-crime-adjacent storytelling. Barabanki fits that lane comfortably.

Her character hasn't been revealed yet, though the report indicates she'll have a close tie to the protagonist, whoever that turns out to be among the ensemble. She's also said to be sporting a look that departs from her earlier screen image, which, for an actor whose career has often been read through glamour, is worth watching for.

Sunny Kaushal and Homebound's Vishal Jethwa round out the principal cast, both playing parts that are being kept under wraps for now. The series is co-produced by Prabhleen Kaur, who worked on Made in India: The Titan Story.

Nothing has been said yet about a streaming platform, an episode count, or a release window. Given production only began recently in Mumbai, a launch date is unlikely before well into next year. For now, the story is simply that Bipasha Basu, known to a generation for Raaz, Jism, Dhoom 2 and Omkara, is back on a set, in a genre she hasn't really explored before, working with a director she wanted. What she does with the part is the next thing worth finding out.
