Curry Barker, director of the 2025 thriller Obsession, revealed he’s already reached out to Nathan Fielder after being captivated by Fielder’s latest film, You Can See Everything. Speaking at the Time100 Next Gala held at Pier59 Studios on Thursday night, Barker described the film as ‘freakin’ insane and awesome,’ admitting he didn’t know much about Elizabeth Holmes’ story before watching.

Still, he was drawn in from the start: ‘I wished it was longer. That’s rare, you know?’ He praised the way the film blurred the line between narrative and documentary, calling it a genre-defying experience that felt new, fresh, and different — even if it defied easy categorization. ‘You almost can’t even call it a documentary, but it totally is,’ Barker said.

‘I’m just a huge fan of what [Fielder] is doing.’ His admiration wasn’t just passive. He confirmed he’d personally pitched a collaboration: ‘I told him that. I said, “Hey!” … I just put it out in the water.’ The two are now sharing the same awards circuit, with both films earning critical attention and sparking industry-wide conversations about storytelling for Gen Z audiences.

Barker noted how surreal the evening felt, walking into a room where every direction you looked was someone who’d shaped your life through social media. But one moment stood out: meeting Emma Watson. ‘I was a huge Harry Potter fan growing up,’ he recalled. ‘I saw her and I froze.

It’s so weird, there’s something different about when it’s someone from your childhood that really means a lot. That changes where you’re like, “Oh, woah.” I was totally weird to her. I was trying to play it cool. But I did not play it cool.’ Barker was honored alongside Raye, Druski, Paapa Essiedu, and other rising stars at the event.

The night opened with an intimate performance by Raye, who delivered jazzy renditions of “Cry Me a River” and “Happier Times Ahead.” Himesh Patel and Alex Warren gave speeches, but Ashley Padilla of Saturday Night Live stole the show with a self-deprecating toast: ‘It’s hard to give a toast when you believe you should not be here,’ she quipped. ‘I was going to say something like the children when they asked me who or what gives me hope for the future.

But I realized I don’t know any. I know my niece and nephew… one of them called me a bitch last week. I’m not gonna say which… my niece! My nephew’s an angel.

But I’m not gonna hang all my hope on those guys!’ Barker’s next project, Anything But Ghosts, is set for release on May 7, 2027. Seth Rogen, who penned Barker’s Time100 Next profile, has already seen it, and claims it surpasses Obsession. ‘For those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news… it’s even better,’ Rogen wrote.

And according to Rogen, Barker isn’t just a gifted director, he’s a strong actor too. Whether the two will finally work together remains unconfirmed. But the idea is out there. The water’s been stirred.
