The Tonight Show's cold open restaged the uneasy stare-down from You Can See Everything, with Curtis slipping into a blonde wig to play Holmes opposite Fallon's Fielder.
Jimmy Fallon went full Nathan Fielder on Wednesday's Tonight Show, and he brought Jamie Lee Curtis along to play Elizabeth Holmes for it.
The cold open restaged one of the more talked-about exchanges from You Can See Everything, Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's A24 documentary on the Theranos founder. Curtis showed up in a blonde wig, doing her best wide-eyed Holmes impression, while Fallon dropped his voice into Fielder's flat, probing deadpan.
"Now, be honest. Do you really want to be on the show tonight?" Fallon asked. Curtis, as Holmes, didn't blink. "Of course I do. I love talking to you," she said. Fallon pushed further, asking if she was only there to promote her new show, Newlyweds. Curtis shot back in character: "No, I'm engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There's no reason for me to do that. There's nothing for me to deceive you on."
One more beat followed. "You're being real right now?" Fallon asked. "I'm always being real," Curtis answered, before Fallon walked off and she dropped the act entirely. "Thank God! Fuck, what an asshole!" she yelled, according to both Variety and TheWrap's accounts of the segment.
Curtis was actually on the show to promote Newlyweds, the NBC sitcom she co-created with Gail Lerner and which stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly. It premiered October 23, and Curtis appears in a recurring guest role. Lerner, was let go from the show earlier this month over what was described as creative differences, calling the experience the most joyous of her TV career on her way out.
A documentary everyone's suddenly doing bits about
You Can See Everything opened in theaters October 16 and has turned into one of the stranger hits of the year. It tracks Holmes and partner Billy Evans in the stretch before she began an 11-year sentence for defrauding Theranos investors, filmed over more than three years by Fielder and Oppenheim.
The box office figures depend on who's counting. Variety put the domestic gross at $45.1 million. TheWrap reported it had crossed $50 million domestically. Deadline had it at roughly $45 million worldwide. Whichever number holds up, the film is being talked up as a contender for A24's biggest release ever and one of the highest-grossing documentaries in box office history.
Fielder's interrogation scenes with Holmes have already been meme'd into the ground online, which is presumably why Fallon reached for this particular bit days before Halloween. Expect more of this kind of thing as the film keeps expanding and awards chatter builds around it.
