Dakota Johnson Stars In Taylor Swift's Patient Zero Video

The two have kept their bond mostly private since meeting at SNL's 40th anniversary in 2015, right up until Johnson showed up at Swift's wedding to Travis Kelce.

Dakota Johnson turning up in Taylor Swift's new music video isn't a casting coup out of nowhere. It's a friendship more than ten years old finally landing on camera.

Swift wrote and directed Patient Zero herself, with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki shooting it. The video, which stars Johnson alongside Colin Farrell, premiered at the MTV VMAs on September 27, the same night Swift picked up the ceremony's first-ever Artist Director Honors.

What's notable is how long Swift and Johnson have kept this quiet. Bollywood Shaadis traces the friendship back to February 2015, when both women were at Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special, Johnson hosting a Q&A while Swift made a surprise cameo. Nothing public came of it for over a year.

Then, on Johnson's 27th birthday in October 2016, Cara Delevingne posted a since-deleted FaceTime photo captioned "facetimefamilyphoto," with Swift and Johnson both in frame. Days later the three were photographed at New York's Waverly Inn and then at Bowery Ballroom with Serena Williams and Zoe Kravitz in tow. When Johnson hosted SNL that same year, she gave Swift a shoutout in her monologue. After that, the friendship mostly went quiet again, surfacing only in the odd New York sighting over the years that followed.

It resurfaced properly in 2025, with the two grabbing dinner alongside their brothers. Then in April 2026, Swift wrote Johnson's entry for TIME's 100 Most Influential People list, calling her synonymous with "refreshing honesty" and saying she could vouch for Johnson being one of the most empathetic people she knows. Three months later, Johnson was in the room when Swift married Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.

So by the time the cameras rolled on Patient Zero, this wasn't two famous women thrown together by a label or a director's whim. Johnson has said, in a Verity red carpet interview and later on the Fangirl Nation podcast, that working with someone she already trusted made the whole shoot easy. She's called it the most fun she's had on a set, adding that she and Swift simply work well together and respect each other's instincts.

Patient Zero is one of four new tracks on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift's album that dropped on September 25 alongside Cleveland!, Pink Clouding and Babylon. Swift has said she wrote the additional songs after a trip to Sweden with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback, celebrating the original album's record first week.

What's left unclear is whether this turns into anything more than a one-off. Nobody involved has said a word about Johnson and Swift working together again, and for now, Patient Zero stands as the only proof this friendship has gone creative.
