Eisenberg Turns Down Zuckerberg Role Again, Says He Doesn’t Want to Be ‘Representative’ of Tech World

Jesse Eisenberg has officially stepped away from the Zuckerberg saga — again. Not just once, but twice. The actor, who played Mark Zuckerberg in 2010’s The Social Network, has turned down the role in Aaron Sorkin’s sequel, The Social Reckoning, despite Sorkin’s belief that he’d return. The film, released October 9 by Sony Pictures, stars Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg and Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen, the whistleblower behind the real-life data scandal.

Eisenberg hasn’t seen it yet, “I have a thousand million thoughts about the movie,” he told Deadline. But his reasons for bowing out are clear: he doesn’t want to be a public face for a platform he doesn’t use, nor does he want to spend a year in press cycles talking about tech he’s disinterested in.

“I’m not in the tech world,” he said flatly. “Despite what you think, by looking at me from the side.” Sorkin, reportedly stunned, admitted he’d spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg, even after knowing the offer was lucrative. Money, he said, isn’t a motivator for Eisenberg. In fact, it’s a disincentive.

“It’s admirable,” Sorkin told Vanity Fair. “He’s very concerned about raising his kids with too much money.” Meanwhile, Eisenberg is focused on his own project: The Debut, a film he wrote, directed, and stars in. It’s a quiet character study about a shy woman finding her voice through community theater, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.

Premiered at Telluride in September, it lands in theaters December 11 via A24. So while the Zuckerberg legacy gets re-examined on screen, Eisenberg has already moved on. Not just from the role, but from the spotlight itself. The next chapter?
