Advance bookings for Haiwaan opened in bits and pieces on Tuesday, and by 8 PM they'd added up to 7,917 tickets sold, a gross of ₹18.2 lakh, according to Koimoi's tracking. That excludes blocked seats, and it's only a partial picture. Full-fledged counters across single screens and multiplex chains were expected to go live overnight, which means the real test of where this film stands comes Wednesday morning, a day before it actually hits screens.

The film releases this Friday, September 11, and it's carrying more weight than a routine advance-booking update suggests. Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan haven't shared a screen together since Tashan in 2008. Seventeen years is a long gap by any measure, and Priyadarshan, who directed both of them separately in some of Hindi cinema's most quoted comedies, is the one bringing them back together, this time for something far grimmer.

Haiwaan is a crime thriller, and it's a remake, specifically of Priyadarshan's own Malayalam film Oppam, which starred Mohanlal. That's a fact worth sitting with. Directors remaking their own work across languages isn't rare in this industry, but doing it seventeen years after your last pairing with one of the leads, and switching genres from broad comedy to gritty thriller, is a specific kind of gamble.

The supporting cast is stacked to cushion that gamble. Boman Irani, Sharib Hashmi, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar round out an ensemble that trade reports describe as solid, and the film is being sold on the tagline of a Hero versus Haiwaan showdown, which tells you exactly what lane it's playing in.

Production credit sits with KVN Productions and Thespian Films, backed by Venkat K Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn. Their timing bet is the festive week itself. Haiwaan is landing squarely in the extended-footfall window that studios chase every September, hoping holiday crowds and long weekends do some of the heavy lifting that word of mouth usually has to manage alone.

For now, the numbers are too early to read as a verdict. 7,917 tickets on a partial pre-sale day isn't a flop signal and it isn't a blockbuster signal either, it's just Tuesday. What happens once bookings open in full, and whether that reunion pull between Akshay and Saif translates into actual footfalls on opening morning, is the story that gets written Thursday and Friday, not today.
