Imran Khan, the actor, has become the centre of a political storm in Mumbai after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya lodged a formal complaint with the city’s police over his citizenship status. The complaint was filed at Gamdevi police station on Monday, following Khan’s participation in a protest held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Somaiya alleged that Khan, who has publicly identified as an Indian citizen from Mumbai, actually holds US citizenship and had falsely claimed otherwise. He demanded immediate summons for the actor to appear before authorities and produce proof of his nationality. Police, according to Somaiya, have assured him they will issue such a notice. The former MP accused Khan of being part of a broader effort to destabilise public order by amplifying claims that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is anti-Muslim. He pointed to Malabar Hill — where the protest took place and where the Muslim population is small, as evidence that the narrative doesn’t align with local demographics. SIR, he argued, had deleted 40 per cent of voter names in the area, but he insisted this wasn’t the real motive behind the agitation. Instead, he described it as a coordinated campaign involving activists and public figures like Javed Akhtar and Naseeruddin Shah, aimed at inciting unrest. Somaiya also raised concerns about protest logistics, questioning how funds were being used for flights, vehicles, and hotel stays during the demonstrations. He highlighted inconsistencies in the outrage over police conduct, noting that while activists criticised police actions against protesters, no complaints were filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged misconduct towards a woman officer. Despite these allegations, Somaiya reiterated that he has no issue with people expressing opinions. Only with what he called a deliberate attempt to create disorder through mass protests. The case remains under investigation, with no official statement yet from Imran Khan or the Mumbai police. No further details have been released about the timeline for any summons or document verification.
