Indian 2 ended on a cliffhanger. Senapathy, cornered by the police after an officer was critically hurt, strikes a deal to save the man's life, escapes in an ambulance and promises he'll be back. That promise is finally moving toward becoming Indian 3, according to a report by Sun News Tamil that both Pinkvilla and the Times of India have since picked up.

The claim, per that report: a major chunk of Indian 3 was shot back-to-back with Indian 2, the standard playbook for a two-part shoot. What's left, reportedly, is limited patchwork, a scene here, a scene there, plus a considerable stack of computer graphics work still to be finished. No studio or Shankar's team has confirmed a shooting schedule or a post-production timeline. This is trade reporting, not an official statement, and it's worth treating it that way until Lyca Productions or Shankar himself says otherwise.

Indian 2 itself landed to what TOI calls a mixed reception. Kamal Haasan returned as Senapathy, the vigilante who first showed up in 1996's Indian and came back 28 years later to find Chitra Aravindhan, a Chennai media professional, running a satirical online channel with his friends. Chitra's campaign to bring Senapathy back turns on him once he discovers his own father is one of the corrupt men Senapathy's crusade exposes. That personal betrayal, and the manhunt that follows, is what sets up Indian 3.

The returning cast, going by what's been reported, includes Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Vivek and Samuthirakani. Nobody's talked new additions yet, and nobody's talked release window either. Given how much VFX is apparently still pending, a 2026 date feels optimistic at best.

There's a reason fans are twitchy about anything Shankar-Kamal right now. Indian 2's reception fed straight into a broader mood this year about big-budget spectacle films from veteran directors not quite landing the way they used to, the same conversation that's followed Sardar 2 and a few other franchise sequels into theatres. Whether Indian 3 can turn that mood around depends entirely on what's still stuck in post, and how long the VFX pipeline actually takes once work resumes.

For now, the only concrete update is that patchwork shoots and VFX passes are reportedly back on the table. An official word from the production, on dates or on anything else, hasn't landed. Until it does, this stays a report about a report, not a confirmed comeback.
