Anirudh Ravichander's second track for the Rajinikanth sequel borrows its title from a Baasha catchphrase, and Times of India reports the reaction online is anything but unanimous.
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has its second single out, and this one comes wearing its nostalgia on its sleeve. "One Sun One Moon," released Thursday, takes its name from one of the superstar's most quoted lines from Baasha, and that alone has got Twitter and Instagram going back and forth on whether the callback works or feels like a crutch.
Anirudh Ravichander composed the track and sings it himself alongside MS Krsna, with Heisenberg and Super Subu writing the lyrics. The sound leans into a soft rock base with traditional Indian instrumentation folded in, a fusion Anirudh's been chasing across his recent scores. Times of India reports fans are divided, some calling it an ambitious swing that lands the star treatment right, others less convinced by the execution.
That split isn't unusual for a Rajinikanth song drop at this point. Every single from this franchise arrives with the weight of the first Jailer behind it, and Nelson Dilipkumar's sequel is under pressure to match a film that turned into a genuine event in 2023. The makers have paired the audio with glimpses of Rajinikanth on screen reprising Muthuvel Pandian, keeping the swagger intact rather than reinventing it.
The supporting cast keeps growing more interesting the closer the film gets to release. Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah and Suraj Venjaramoodu have all had first looks released recently, and reports suggest all three are playing against type as antagonists this time. Mithun Chakraborty rounds out the principal cast. And then there's the cameo list, which reads almost like a stunt in itself, with Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Vijay Sethupathi all expected to turn up in some form.
Jailer 2 releases October 15, and the marketing machine has clearly decided the songs are doing the heavy lifting before the trailer lands. Whether "One Sun One Moon" ages into a fan favourite or gets remembered as the divisive one probably won't be settled until the film's actually out and the song has context around it.
Rajinikanth, meanwhile, isn't slowing down once this one wraps. He moves next to Dharman, the Ashwath Marimuthu film earlier known as Thalaivar173, where he plays a doctor with considerably more style than the job usually gets on screen. Anirudh is composing that one too. After that comes the long-teased reunion with Kamal Haasan on the project currently going by the placeholder title KHxRK, a pairing that's been generating its own chatter independent of anything actually shot yet.
For now, the conversation belongs to Jailer 2, one single at a time, with three weeks left before audiences get to decide for themselves.
