Juhi Chawla's bank balance just got a lot louder than her box office. The Hurun India Rich List has pegged the fortune of Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta at Rs 7,790 crore this year, up from Rs 4,600 crore twelve months ago. That's roughly $880 million, and it makes her India's richest actress by a wide margin.
Last year's number already had people talking. Chawla was India's wealthiest actress and the second-richest actor in the country, trailing only Shah Rukh Khan. This year's jump pushes her past that gap entirely and into a bracket that has little to do with Friday releases or opening weekends.
The money isn't coming from film sets. It's coming from boardrooms.
Chawla co-founded Red Chillies Entertainment alongside Shah Rukh Khan decades ago, and that production house has since grown into one of Bollywood's more durable studios. But the bigger engine appears to be cricket. The Knight Riders ecosystem, anchored by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, has ballooned in value. The KKR franchise alone was valued at close to $1.1 billion back in 2022, and that number has presumably only climbed since with fresh media rights cycles and franchise expansion across leagues.
So while the acting career kept Chawla's face on posters, it's the ownership stakes that have quietly done the heavy lifting on her net worth. That's a pattern worth sitting with. An entire generation knows her from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Darr, but the wealth story here has almost nothing to do with any of that.
Her recent screen choices tell their own story too. Gulaab Gang, Chalk N Duster, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Sharmaji Namkeen, Friday Night Plan, these aren't the projects of someone chasing a paycheque. They read more like the choices of someone picking work because she wants to, not because she needs to.
That's the real shift the Hurun numbers point to. Chawla isn't just an actress anymore, not in any way that matters to her balance sheet. She's a co-founder with equity in a production banner and a cricket franchise that keeps getting more valuable every season. The film industry made her famous. The businesses she built alongside that fame are what's making her rich at a scale most working actors never touch.
Whether next year's Hurun list keeps climbing at the same pace will depend on how the Knight Riders franchises perform in valuation terms and whether Red Chillies keeps its slate busy. For now, the number stands at Rs 7,790 crore, and it's the kind of figure that makes a film career look like the smaller half of the story.
