That's the kind of opening Karthi hasn't seen from a solo lead vehicle in a while, at least by the account trade trackers are giving. It also lands him ahead of the weekend's other big Tamil release, Suri's Mandaadi, which reportedly clocked a comparable first day number, something being flagged as notable given how the last few weeks have gone. Kavin and Nayanthara's Haai, Vishal's Magudam and Rio Raj's Ram And Leela all released recently and none of them managed to build real heat.

Sardar 2's reviews have been mixed, by most accounts, but word of mouth on the ground appears to be doing the heavy lifting. Friday bookings were reportedly still climbing, and with Saturday, Sunday and a Vinayagar Chaturthi holiday Monday still to come, trade estimates suggest the film could pull in anywhere from Rs 40 to 50 crore across its first five days if it holds.

The film features Karthi in a double role opposite S.J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath, and reportedly weaves in a subplot around antibiotics that Mithran has used as a talking point in the film's build-up. The bigger number hanging over all of this is the budget. Sardar 2 is said to have cost around Rs 120 crore, reportedly the highest for any Karthi solo-hero film to date. Amazon Prime has picked up the digital rights and the satellite rights have gone to Sony's Vijay Tamil channel, deals that trade sources say mean the film only needs a theatrical run of Rs 70 to 80 crore to turn a profit, well short of what it would need to reach the coveted Rs 100 crore club.

Context helps explain why the industry is watching this one closely. Karthi's last release, the Pongal film Vaa Vaathiyaar, reportedly made only around Rs 12 crore against a budget said to be close to Rs 40 crore, a number that stung. Sardar 2's opening suggests a course correction, but the real test starts now, over a long weekend that could make or break how this one is remembered by the time it's done running.
