Sardar 2 is finally out, and the opening-day numbers are respectable without being spectacular. The Karthi and SJ Suryah starrer collected Rs 5.30 crore across India on its first day, according to trade estimates reported by Pinkvilla.

Tamil Nadu, unsurprisingly, did the bulk of the work. The state alone brought in Rs 3.75 crore. The Telugu states added roughly Rs 1 crore, Karnataka chipped in Rs 40 lakh, and the rest of the country's screens together managed around Rs 15 lakh. That's a fairly steep drop-off outside the home turf, which tells you where the film's actual audience sits right now.

A shaky start on word of mouth

Here's the part that should worry the makers more than the numbers. Reception on the ground has been mixed at best. Online chatter has already drawn comparisons to Indian 2, and not the flattering kind, with several viewers pointing to bloat and a story that takes its time getting where it's going. Others are calling it a step up from the original Sardar, so the split is real and it's loud.

That inconsistency matters because Sardar 2 doesn't have the weekend to itself. It's up against Soori's Mandaadi, which has opened to a noticeably warmer response. In a market where word of mouth decides Saturday and Sunday more than day-one advance ever does, a clash like this can swing hard in either direction by Monday.

The bigger canvas

Sardar 2 picks up the spy universe the first film set up, splitting its runtime between spy Sardar's origin story told in flashback and his son Vijay's present-day face-off with an antagonist called Black Dagger. It's a bigger, twin-track structure than the original attempted, and the film leans into scale with it.

Karthi carries both timelines opposite SJ Suryah, with Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, Rajisha Vijayan and Yogi Babu rounding out the cast. Sam CS scores the film, George C Williams is behind the camera, and Vijay Velukutty edits. Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment have backed the production, and it shows in how the film has been mounted, even if the reception hasn't fully caught up yet.

The next 48 hours decide the story. If Sardar 2 can hold its Tamil Nadu numbers through the weekend and pick up pace in the Telugu states, the mixed reviews stop mattering. If it can't, the Mandaadi clash turns from a footnote into the headline.
