There was no real contest going into the weekend and there's even less of one now. Mandaadi, Soori's late entrant into a Thursday clash nobody saw coming, has widened the gap on Karthi's Sardar 2 with every passing day since both films opened together.

On day four, Mandaadi added another Rs 13.05 crore net in India, taking its domestic total past Rs 34 crore. Sardar 2 managed just Rs 2.45 crore on the same day, a marginal uptick from its Rs 2.2 crore third-day number, but nowhere close to closing the distance. The spy sequel's India net now sits just over Rs 11 crore after four days.

The worldwide picture is starker. Mandaadi's global gross is nearing Rs 48 crore, per figures reported by Times of India, built on strong overseas numbers that had already added Rs 5 crore to its kitty by day three. Sardar 2's overseas run, by contrast, has been described as dismal, with just Rs 3.5 crore added from international markets through the same period, per Koimoi's tracking.

Go back to the opening weekend and the trend was already obvious. Sardar 2 opened to a decent Rs 4.5 crore net on Thursday but fell 45% on day two and has since shed nearly 900 shows across India in just three days. Koimoi calculated that Mandaadi earned 354.55% more than Sardar 2 on their first Saturday together, and was running 135% ahead of the Karthi film in cumulative India net over the first three days.

None of this was the expected script. Sardar 2 carried the weight of franchise recall going in, riding on goodwill from the first film. Mandaadi, by comparison, wasn't treated as a serious threat until its trailer landed and the sea-set visuals started doing the talking. That shift in perception has translated directly into ticket sales, and theatre owners appear to be reallocating shows accordingly given how quickly Sardar 2 has lost screens.

Online chatter has been unkind to the Karthi film too, with viewers drawing comparisons to other franchise sequels that underwhelmed after strong first instalments, even as some critics maintain the film is worth a theatre watch on its own terms. Mandaadi discussion threads, meanwhile, have been dominated by scene-by-scene breakdowns and spoiler-tagged reactions, the kind of engagement that usually signals a film still has legs.

The real test comes over the next few days. Sardar 2 needs a second-weekend bump just to justify the shows it still has left, while Mandaadi will want to see whether its Saturday surge holds through weekdays or fades once the opening-weekend crowd is done. Trade watchers are already framing Mandaadi as a contender for one of the year's bigger Tamil hits, a status nobody was handing it a month ago.
