Hiphop Tamizha Adhi's team threw a thank-you bash and cut cake for Khushbu's birthday, even as box office trackers cited by trade sites put the film's actual India haul at less than half the makers' number.
Meesaya Murukku 2 threw itself a party on Tuesday. The team behind Hiphop Tamizha Adhi's directorial, produced by Khushbu Sundar, held a thank-you event in Chennai, and the numbers they put out there tell a very different story from what trade trackers are showing.
According to an official poster the production released, the film crossed 51.3 crore in its first four days, which the team is calling Adhi's first 50-crore film as a director-actor. Sacnilk-based box office reports quoted by trade outlets paint a slimmer picture. Those trackers put the film's Tamil Nadu collection at 2.35 crore on Tuesday, its fifth day, taking the total India number to roughly 22 crore across five days. That's less than half of what the makers are claiming, and nobody at the event addressed the gap.
Overseas business appears to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the producers' math. Trade sites tracking the film's India numbers say international collections have padded the figure considerably, which could explain some of the distance between the two counts, though it doesn't fully close it.
The thank-you event wasn't just about box office bragging rights. It doubled as a birthday celebration for Khushbu, with cake-cutting on the same stage where the film's success was toasted. The team also brought the film's fictional Gaana Gang to life, introducing three real gaana artists with composer Deva present, mirroring the group that features in the movie itself.
Last week, Meesaya Murukku 2 reportedly pulled ahead of Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy at the box office, with trade sites citing over 20 crore in India collections at that point. Whichever number you believe, the film has clearly had the better opening fortnight of the two.
The real test comes this Friday. Gandhi Jayanthi is bringing a five-film pileup to Tamil screens, and Meesaya Murukku 2 will have to hold its ground against Vijay Sethupathi's Paddha, Nivin Pauly's Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, Sandeep Kishan's Sigma, Bagath Basil's Don't Trouble The Trouble and Ashok Selvan's Anbil Avan. That's a crowded Friday by any Tamil box office standard, and it'll say a lot about where Meesaya Murukku 2 actually stands once genuinely independent trackers update their numbers against the makers' own count.
For now, both figures are floating out there. One says the film is a 50-crore hit within four days. The other says it's still climbing toward the halfway mark of that claim after five. The truth, as usual with Tamil box office reporting, probably sits somewhere in between, and audiences will get a clearer read once this week's five-way traffic jam plays out.
