Mary Kom walked into the Bigg Boss 20 house this weekend, and Priyanka Chopra made sure everyone already inside knew what they were dealing with.
In a video message shared as Mary entered, Priyanka told the other contestants, "Inka knock out na bhot bhari pata hai" — her punch, she's saying, carries real weight, and not just in the ring. It's the kind of warning that only makes sense coming from someone who's actually studied the woman up close.
Because Priyanka has. She played Mary Kom in the 2014 biopic that carries the boxer's name, a role that had her training in the ring for months and spending time with Mary's family in Manipur to get the mannerisms right. That project didn't just end with a wrap. The two built something that's stuck around more than a decade later.
To Mary herself, Priyanka's message was softer. "Mary bas aap jaisi hain waisi rahiye, khule dil se kheliye," she said, stay exactly who you are, play with an open heart. She added that she's looking forward to watching the journey unfold.
What Mary brings to the house
Mary Kom isn't walking in as a stranger to competition. She's a six-time World Champion and the first Indian woman boxer to win an Olympic medal, a bronze at London in 2012. Discipline is the whole point of her.
But she's framing her Bigg Boss run as something beyond the sport. Speaking to The Indian Express while introducing herself in the house, Mary said, "At home, being a mother has become a major part of my personality. Even as a sportsperson, inside the ring, the spirit of winning is another aspect of my personality. Inside the house, the audience will get to see various shades of my personality."
That's the pitch, really. Not the boxer who ended fights in the first round. The mother, the competitor, and whatever third version of herself the house pulls out of her over the coming weeks.
Whether the other contestants take Priyanka's warning seriously is a different question. Bigg Boss houses have swallowed bigger reputations before breakfast. But Mary Kom's entry changes the texture of the season regardless. She's not there to make friends, and she's said as much herself, in her own way.
New episodes of Bigg Boss 20 stream on Jio Hotstar at 9 pm and air on Colors TV at 10.30 pm. How long Mary's discipline holds up against house politics is the thing to watch for now.
