Five days out from release, the Ramayana marketing machine has found its next character to spotlight. On Thursday, the makers dropped the first look of Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Ravana's sister and the Princess of Janasthan, in a poster captioned simply: "Jansthan ki Rajkumari, Surpanakha."

The image leans heavily into the production's scale fetish, which by now you'd expect from this project. Rakul is in a royal getup, heavy gold jewellery, an elaborate headpiece, the whole nine yards of the grand visual language Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra have been building out poster by poster.

Rakul called the part a "truly special experience," adding that Surpanakha "has a significant place in this epic" and that exploring her had been "an incredible journey as an actor." She also said being part of a story "cherished across generations" felt like a privilege, and that she's looking forward to audiences seeing what Tiwari and Malhotra have built "on such a grand scale."

For anyone who skipped the original text, Surpanakha isn't a footnote. Her encounter with Rama and Lakshman during the exile is the hinge the whole epic turns on. It's the spark that eventually drags Ravana into the story and sets up the war that defines Ramayana's second half. So casting her well, and revealing her late in the promotional cycle, tracks. The makers have been doling out first looks like chapter headings.

She joins a cast that's already stacked. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi is Sita, Yash takes on Ravana, Sunny Deol plays Hanuman and Ravi Dubey is Lakshman. Tiwari directs, with Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios producing alongside DNEG and Yash's Monster Mind Creations, a combination of banners that tells you where the budget's gone.

A two-part bet, five days from the finish line

Ramayana: Part 1 releases worldwide on November 5, 2026, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with an IMAX run planned. Part 2 is slated for Diwali 2027, which means the makers have over a year to keep this drip-feed of posters and reveals going before the story actually closes out.

Distribution is split by territory. Sony Pictures handles the film outside India, Dharma Productions takes the Hindi market. That's two big machines pushing the same release, which partly explains why the first-look rollout has felt so relentless in the run-up to November 5.

What's left unclear is how much of Surpanakha's arc actually makes it into Part 1 versus getting pushed to the sequel, given the story's natural break points. That answer arrives in five days, when Part 1 finally opens and the comparisons between poster and screen time begin in earnest.
