Rashami Desai is back on television fiction, nearly eight years after she last anchored a daily soap. She headlines Star Plus' new show Sayoneee, playing a character called Maya, and tells Bollywood Hungama the gap was deliberate, not forced.

Desai says scripts kept arriving through those years. She just didn't sign any of them. Reality shows and digital work kept her visible, but the daily soap slot stayed empty until Sayoneee showed up with something she wanted to say yes to.

"Maya is not just a character or an imagination," Desai said. "She is a very practical character that I am going to play in Sayoneee. And as an actor, I wouldn't deny that I received many offers, but I turned them down because I didn't feel connected to the stories or the characters that were coming my way."

She went further, framing the decision as one about legacy rather than paycheques. "Every artist wants to play a character that is beautifully written. I wasn't looking for a comeback on television. I was looking for a purpose. As an artist, we get a number of opportunities, but it's not necessary to just be visible, work and earn money. You should do something that people remember you for, and that's what I am known for. Sayoneee has that spark. I feel the story is bigger than the artists themselves."

That's a fair bit of pressure to put on a launch, but Desai has the track record to back the confidence. Uttaran ran for years and turned her into one of the medium's most recognisable faces, and Dil Se Dil Tak kept her in that lane before she stepped away from fiction altogether.

Sayoneee brings her back opposite Janhavi Soni and Gautam Singh Vig, both in key roles alongside her. Star Plus has set the premiere for September 23 at 7:30 PM, and the show will also stream on JioHotstar for viewers who'd rather catch it outside the linear slot.

What's notable here isn't just the return itself. It's the reasoning she's offering for it. Eight years is a long time to sit out a genre that made her, especially with scripts reportedly landing on her desk through that stretch. Desai's version is that none of them cleared the bar she'd set for herself, not that the bar moved to meet her.

Whether Maya turns into another Uttaran-level fixture is a different question, one the ratings will answer starting the week of September 23. For now, the story is simpler: an actress who stayed away on her own terms is walking back in on them too.
