Rob Reiner won an Emmy on Sunday night for a show he shot before he died. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, night two, gave him Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his three-episode run on The Bear's fourth season, nearly nine months after his death.

No one walked up to collect it. Wendi McLendon-Covey did the honours, telling the Peacock Theater crowd, "We all wish he was here," and the room stood for a minute-long ovation, according to Deadline.

The cameras found Jamie Lee Curtis in the audience. She was nominated for her own guest turn on the same show, and Reiner had credited her with talking him into taking the role in the first place. The two go back decades. They played on-screen exes and the parents of Zooey Deschanel's character on New Girl.

This is Reiner's third Emmy and his first since 1978, when he won his second straight supporting actor trophy for All in the Family. That's a 48-year gap, and per Variety, it breaks the record for the longest span between acting Emmy wins, a mark his own father Carl Reiner had held since 1995, when he closed a 37-year gap between a 1958 win and a guest comedy Emmy for Mad About You. Carl set the record in guest comedy. Rob just took the category back from him.

Variety also flagged something rarer still. This is the first posthumous Emmy for an on-camera performance since Raúl Julia won for The Burning Season in 1995.

Reiner died at 78 last December, alongside his wife Michele Singer Reiner, both found dead in their home on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, is headed to trial in connection with the deaths, Deadline has reported. Nothing has been decided in court yet, and that's worth saying plainly. It's an open case, not a settled one.

On The Bear, Reiner played Albert Schnur, a restaurant franchiser mentoring Ebraheim, Edwin Lee Gibson's character, on growing the Original Beef sandwich window. The show wrote him a quiet exit. In the season finale, Ebra calls Albert with news that Carmy had agreed to the franchise deal. Albert can't be heard on the other end of the line, but Ebra signs off with "As you wish," a nod to Cary Elwes' line in The Princess Bride, the 1987 film Reiner directed.

His last screen credit was smaller, a cameo as George Washington in Larry David's HBO special this summer. He's expected to turn up again in the In Memoriam segment when the main Emmy telecast airs September 14 on NBC, hosted by Mariska Hargitay. An edited cut of these first two nights runs on FXX September 12.

The Bear's fifth and final season won't be eligible until next year's ceremony. So this is likely the last time Rob Reiner's name gets called out on an Emmy stage.
