The Glee co-creator told Entertainment Tonight he wrote the script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan but that no original cast member has read it yet.
Ryan Murphy dropped this on a red carpet, casually, the way he tends to. Stepping out Wednesday night for the American Horror Story season 13 celebration, the Glee co-creator told Entertainment Tonight he'd wrapped a revival script an hour earlier.
"Well, funny you ask, cause I just finished the script an hour ago," Murphy said, according to both Just Jared and TheWrap. "So, we have a script. Brad, Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something."
That's Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, his co-creators from day one. Together they built the show that turned a fictional Ohio glee club into a six-season, six-Emmy, four-Golden-Globe machine between 2009 and 2015.
Murphy says he's already made calls. Around ten original cast members, he told ET, know a script exists.
"I've been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, and it's very sweet," he said. "They've all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea."
Nobody's actually read the thing yet, by his own account. "Nobody's read it, so I don't know, we'll see," Murphy added. "I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it."
So this is a script, not a greenlight. Worth saying plainly, since Murphy's language leaves plenty of room between finished pages and an actual pickup.
This isn't a new idea for him either. Back in July, per TheWrap, he told People he'd been thinking about it because younger viewers keep discovering the show on Hulu and Disney+, where it still streams in full.
"So many young people now watch it," he said then. "And I'm like, 'Maybe we should revisit that show.'" He called his own attachment to Glee strong enough to justify "a new incarnation of that in some capacity."
The original ensemble is a long list: Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Harry Shum Jr., Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Chord Overstreet, Melissa Benoist, Alex Newell and Becca Tobin, alongside Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, both of whom died after the show ended. Any revival conversation runs straight into that fact, whether Murphy addresses it directly or not.
Amber Riley has floated her own version of this before, telling interviewers last year she'd be open to a reboot or a spinoff built around her character Mercedes Jones.
For now there's a script sitting somewhere, three names on it who go back to season one, and a cast that's curious but unread. Whether Fox, Disney or anyone else picks this up is the next real question, and Murphy hasn't said when the actors get their copies.
