Netflix has greenlit a 1950s prequel to Stranger Things, set in Marion, Nevada, with Kate Trefry as showrunner and Joe Wright directing. Premiere: 2028.
Netflix has officially greenlit Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel series set in the 1950s, just in time for Stranger Things Day. The announcement lands on November 6, 2026 — the same day Will Byers vanished in the original series, and confirms what fans have speculated since Season 4: the Upside Down’s roots are deeper than Hawkins.
The show will premiere in 2028, with production underway in New Mexico. No cast has been revealed yet. But the tone is already clear: this isn’t a retread. It’s a fresh entry into the franchise, built around new characters, themes, and mythology.
Still, the echoes are unmistakable. The teaser drops a bike by a restricted zone, lights flicker in the distance, and the sky ripples like a wound. A wormhole? An alien signal?
Or something older? The Duffer Brothers won’t say. They’re not even allowed to. But they do warn: watch the skies, nerds.
The series is being led by Kate Trefry, who wrote the Tony-winning stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow and has been a key writer since Season 2. She’s now the showrunner, a first for her, and she’s not holding back. ‘It’s my insane honor,’ she said. ‘We hope to blow your minds and break your hearts.’ Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, will helm the first three episodes.
His involvement suggests a cinematic scale, a focus on atmosphere over exposition. The story takes place in Marion, Nevada, a town that doesn’t appear in the original series or the play. But it’s connected. The teaser features “Sh-Boom” by The Chords, a song tied to Henry Creel’s memory in Season 5.
And yes, the rock he finds in the caves? That’s getting an origin. The Duffers confirmed it: Other Worlds will answer loose threads left dangling after the finale. This isn’t just a prequel.
It’s a bridge. Between the stage play and the TV series. Between the 1950s and the 1980s. Between the past and the Upside Down.
Netflix hasn’t scheduled a release for the filmed version of The First Shadow yet, but it’s likely to is a narrative anchor. The taping happened in February. The location was changed to Marion, Nevada, a detail that hints at how early the prequel was conceived. Shawn Levy, who helped shape the original series, has moved to Disney.
He’s still executive producing through 21Laps, but no longer directing. The Duffers, under a new deal with Paramount, are also stepping back from day-to-day control. Their role is now advisory. The torch has passed.
To Trefry. To Wright. To a new generation of storytellers. The question isn’t whether the world of Stranger Things will expand.
It’s how deep the rabbit hole goes. And when the next chapter begins.
