Hulu has officially ordered a full series of Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files, marking the latest chapter in one of television’s most enduring sci-fi franchises. The project, which had been in development for years, now moves forward with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel cast as two FBI agents who form an unlikely alliance after being assigned to a long-dormant division focused on unexplained phenomena. The show’s logline, shared by The Hollywood Reporter, describes them as “highly decorated but vastly different” — a setup that signals a fresh dynamic, not a revival of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Sources confirm they are playing original characters, not reboots of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s iconic roles. Coogler, best known for his work on Sinners and Black Panther, wrote and directed the pilot episode and will serve as executive producer alongside Jennifer Yale, whose previous credits include Underground and See. Yale is set to lead as showrunner. The production is being handled by Proximity Media, Coogler’s company co-founded with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Along with 20th Television and Onyx Collective. Chris Carter, the original creator of The X-Files, remains an executive producer, joining Coogler, Yale, Zinzi Coogler, Ohanian, and Simone Harris of Proximity Media. Deadwyler and Patel are also listed as co-executive producers. The pilot’s score was composed by Ludwig Göransson, who has worked with Coogler on multiple projects, including Sinners. Coogler expressed deep personal connection to the franchise in a statement: “I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me.” He added that the team aimed to honor what made the original resonate while carving out its own identity. “Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters,” he said. The original series ran from 1993 to 2002 on Fox, spanning nine seasons and earning 61 Emmy nominations and 15 wins. It returned for two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, with Anderson and Duchovny reprising their roles. Two feature films were also released. Deadwyler, known for her performances in The Harder They Fall, Till, and The Piano Lesson, and Patel, recognized for EastEnders, Yesterday, and The Odyssey, previously starred together in the HBO Max miniseries Station Eleven. Hulu had initially ordered the pilot in February, when Deadwyler was announced as the first lead. A premiere date and number of episodes remain unconfirmed. The series is poised to be Coogler’s most high-profile television venture yet, following the historic success of Sinners, which earned 16 Oscar nominations and four wins, including best screenplay and best actor for Michael B. Jordan. The new X-Files is expected to bring a distinct voice to the franchise, shaped by Coogler’s vision and the collaborative energy of his creative circle.
