YouTubers say they have received legal notices from the film's production house over what it called defamatory content, even as Yash, Kiara Advani and director Geetu Mohandas say nothing in public.
Nobody from Toxic has said a word since the film cratered at the box office, and that silence is starting to say something of its own.
According to The Free Press Journal, the Kannada superstar's pan-India gangster drama opened big across nearly 7,000 screens in six languages on August 26, then fell off a cliff the very next day. What's followed hasn't been an ordinary bad-review cycle. It's been weeks of YouTube videos with titles like "Yash ka career khatam" and "Ab Ramayana ka kya hoga?", memes mocking director Geetu Mohandas as "Geetu Nolandas," and a steady drumbeat of content predicting the end of Yash's stardom.
The female cast hasn't been spared either. Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth and Tara Sutaria have all taken heat, per the outlet's reporting, and clips insinuating that Kiara's husband Sidharth Malhotra is unhappy about her bold scenes in the film have circulated widely.
The legal notices, and the silence
Here's the part that should worry the makers more than any meme. The Free Press Journal reports that some YouTubers claim to have received legal notices from Toxic's production house over content it calls "defamatory or false." Nobody involved with the film has confirmed this publicly. And nobody involved with the film has addressed any of it publicly, full stop. Not Yash, not Geetu Mohandas, not the studio.
That quiet is a stark contrast to the multi-city promotional blitz the cast ran through in the days before release, and it's fuelling exactly the kind of speculation a PR team usually exists to shut down. Some of that speculation, per the report, has taken the shape of a conspiracy theory floating around online, that rival film industries threatened by Yash's stardom are paying for the pile-on. There's no evidence offered for that claim, and it should be read as exactly what it is, an unverified rumour doing the rounds.
Is the hate proportionate
The Free Press Journal's own take is that the trolling has outrun the film's actual flaws. Choppy editing and clunky Hindi dialogue, sure, fair criticism. But the piece argues Toxic's exploration of guilt and consequence, particularly in scenes between Raya and Ganga, gets buried under a wave of hate that reads less like film criticism and more like a coordinated takedown.
The piece draws a comparison to Andaz Apna Apna, No Smoking, Rockstar, Tamasha and Kabir Singh, films that got savaged on release and were reassessed later as cult favourites or genuine successes. Whether Toxic earns that same reconsideration is a different question, and the outlet is careful to say Toxic doesn't reach those films' heights even on its best day.
What happens next depends entirely on whether Yash's camp decides silence is a strategy or just a delay. Geetu Mohandas once said in a 2021 interview that she never sticks to the script and edits her way to whatever the film becomes. Right now, the narrative around Toxic is being edited entirely by everyone except her.
