The Neem Karoli Baba biopic, shot on a shoestring budget, has turned into one of the year's biggest sleeper hits and heads into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana theatres.
Hanuman Ansh is going regional. The Hindi spiritual drama that nobody quite saw coming will open across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on September 18, with Trivikram Srinivas presenting the dubbed version, according to an announcement from Fortune Four Cinemas on Friday.
Fortune Four, the distribution outfit run by Sai Soujanya, Trivikram's wife, will handle the Telugu theatrical rollout. The company's own social post called it a "grand release," and given how the film has performed elsewhere, that's not just marketing talk.
What makes this one interesting is the gap between where Hanuman Ansh started and where it's ended up. Telugu360 reported the film was made on a budget of around Rs 2 crore. It opened quietly. Then word of mouth did what word of mouth rarely does anymore for a small, unglamorous release, it kept building, week after week, dragging audiences back to a film with no stars anyone outside Bollywood insiders would recognise.
The numbers themselves are a bit of a moving target depending on who's counting. 123telugu put the nett India collection at Rs 153 crore as of Thursday. Telugu360, filing a day earlier, had it past the Rs 100 crore mark. Either way, for a film that cost roughly what a wedding in Chandni Chowk might, the multiple on that budget is the real story.
A director's blessing, not a directing job
Trivikram isn't stepping behind the camera here. His role is presenter, the credit usually reserved for someone lending their name and clout to get a film wider distribution and trade attention. Producer Namrata Singh told Telugu360 that Trivikram came on board out of personal devotion to Hanuman, which tracks given the film's subject matter, a biopic on Neem Karoli Baba, the Hindi-speaking guru whose ashram at Kainchi Dham has drawn everyone from Steve Jobs devotees to Silicon Valley techies over the decades.
Shobhinav Satyaa and Chandan Anand lead the cast, with Nikhil Dubey, Udaysinh Rajput and Purnima Tiwari in support. Vishal Chaturvedi wrote and directed. It's produced by Swambhu Media Network along with Ragini S., Namrata G. S., Chaturvedi himself, and Anupriya A. Nagar, a small, mostly first-time production team by Bollywood standards.
The Telugu push isn't the film's only expansion. Telugu360 reported that Hombale Films, the KGF studio, has come on for the overseas release, which tells you the producers are treating this less like a regional dubbing exercise and more like a full-scale rollout while the momentum lasts.
Whether Telugu audiences respond the way Hindi belt audiences did is the open question. Spiritual biopics don't always travel across language lines the way action or comedy does. But with Trivikram's name attached and a September 18 date now locked in, Hanuman Ansh gets one more shot at proving its run wasn't a Hindi-market fluke.
