Baththa opened on October 1 without much noise and is closing its first weekend as the best performer among last week's new Tamil releases. The Balaji Tharaneetharan film, starring Vijay Sethupathi alongside Lijomol Jose and child actor Sai, has pulled in Rs 11.68 crore gross and Rs 10.05 crore net across its first four days, according to trade figures reported by Sacnilk and cited by Filmibeat Tamil.

Sunday alone brought in Rs 3.10 crore, with the film running across 1,290 shows nationwide. That's the kind of growth curve distributors like. Day one was soft. Every day since has climbed.

The film arrived in a crowded week, up against Mandadi, Meesaya Murukku 2 and Dorothy, all still running in theatres. Baththa still managed to lead the pack of new entries, even if it hasn't matched the scale of Suriya's Mandadi at the box office. Trade voices quoted by Filmibeat Tamil describe the opening as far from disappointing, calling it a solid start for a film that leaned on performance over spectacle.

That performance, by most accounts, belongs to young Sai. The boy plays the role that softens Baththa's rowdy character over the course of the film, built loosely around a theme of non-violence timed to release during Gandhi Jayanti week. One scene in particular, where the boy breaks down and admits the truth about money while pleading with Baththa, is being singled out as the emotional spine that held the film together. Filmibeat Tamil's report goes as far as suggesting Sai could be in contention for the National Award for Best Child Artist, though that remains speculation at this stage and nothing close to confirmed.

Music has done its bit too. Sai Abhyankar's score, and a climax track sung by Vijay Sethupathi himself, are being credited with giving the film extra pull in theatres over the weekend.

There's also the calendar working in Baththa's favour. With no major Tamil release scheduled this week, the film has a clear run until Jailer 2 shows up. Trade watchers expect the numbers to keep climbing through the week rather than drop off, which is usually how a word-of-mouth hit behaves once the opening weekend noise settles.

A success meet for the cast and crew was scheduled for the same day these numbers came in, suggesting the team already senses they've got a running hit rather than a one-weekend wonder. Whether Baththa can push past the Rs 20-crore mark before Jailer 2 arrives is the number worth watching next.
