Sangeetha Sornalingam walked into Kamala Cinemas in Chennai on Friday morning, daughter Divya Sasha beside her, to watch her son Jason Sanjay's first film as a director. That's the headline here, not the screenplay.

Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan, opened in theatres the same day. But the clip that travelled fastest on Friday wasn't a trailer cut or a box office card. It was paparazzi footage of Sangeetha arriving at the venue with Divya, and then, after the screening, hugging Jason as the hall erupted. Pinkvilla put that video out first, and it spread the way family footage involving Thalapathy Vijay's household tends to spread.

The context matters more than the hug itself.

Sangeetha had filed for divorce before the Chengalpattu Family Court back in February, according to Onmanorama, and in that petition she alleged Vijay was in an extramarital relationship with an actor. That's a claim made in a legal filing, not a finding by any court, and it needs to be read that way. Then, on August 7, Sangeetha appeared before the same court over video conference and said she no longer wanted to pursue the case. She filed to withdraw it, and the proceedings closed there. Neither she nor Vijay has said anything in public about where things stand between them now.

Which is what makes Friday's appearance worth noting. It's the first time since that courtroom episode that Sangeetha has shown up anywhere this visibly, and she chose her son's big day to do it. No sign of Vijay in any of the footage going around, at least none that's surfaced so far.

For Jason, the day was supposed to be about Sigma. He's written and directed the film, which follows a man named Guru caught between a hidden fortune, a casino running behind a theatre's front, and a group of people who all want what he's found. Sundeep Kishan leads, with Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj and Magalakshmi Sudarsanan filling out the cast. It's his first time behind the camera after growing up adjacent to one of Tamil cinema's most scrutinised careers, and he's chosen to build something that isn't an extension of his father's filmography.

Whether Sigma lands with audiences is a separate conversation playing out elsewhere today. What's clear from Friday is that whatever strain exists in the Vijay household, it didn't keep his mother and sister from showing up for him.

No one in the family has addressed the divorce filing or its withdrawal beyond what's already on court record. Whether that silence holds as Jason's directing career gets going, and as Sigma makes its way through its opening weekend, is the thing to watch now.
