Bandra's New Joker Turns Every Plate Into A Trick

The Turner Road spot pairs a magic-and-mischief theme with dishes like a four-day fermented sourdough lamb sandwich and an ube-matcha dessert that changes character with every bite.

There's a new address on Turner Road, opposite Mala Sinha's old bungalow in Bandra West, and it wants you to be a little confused about what you're eating. Joker runs on a theme of surprise, deception and illusion, worked out across food and drink by the duo behind it, Durgesh and Sumeet.

The menu doesn't ease you in. Morning starts gentle, with a Thermal V60 pour-over that lets berry notes come through clean. Then things get theatrical.

The Moroccan Pulled Lamb Sandwich, apparently the one Shahid tells every table to order, is the standout. Lamb pulled generously and packed into sourdough that's been fermented four days, giving the bread a lightness you don't expect from something this loaded. Keep a napkin close. It's a two-hand, run-down-your-wrist kind of sandwich.

Cocktails are where the illusion bit really lands. The Frozen Masquerade arrives in a glass carved out of ice, built on homemade limoncello, Bacardi white rum, basil and a touch of lychee. The lychee hits first, then the lime takes over, so the drink genuinely tastes different by the time you're at the bottom of the glass. False Reflection goes the other way, all mirror panels and tequila, charred bell pepper infusion and a maraschino finish, with the smoky tequila note arriving last and staying longest.

Snacking here means picking your own crisps and dips, wonton crisps, sweet potato chips and pita squares among the options, with the tomato ricotta and truffle dips doing most of the heavy lifting. The Spicy Hummus with Falafel plays a similar trick, curd folded into the hummus for an unexpected sweetness while harissa powder supplies the heat. The falafel itself could use a firmer bite, though the black sesame crunch makes up ground.

On the indulgent end, the Animal Style Fried Chicken wings, marinated in white pepper and coated in a secret in-house sauce, land somewhere between sweet and spicy-ketchup and are hard to stop eating. The Pepper Pop Prawns, dusted in potato starch and tossed with red pepper and spring onion, get their crunch without burying the prawn underneath.

Bowls are a quieter, steadier part of the menu. A Spicy Tofu Bowl with sticky rice and steamed vegetables works as the wholesome option, while the Shawarma Chicken Bowl throws tomato sauce, mayo, crunchy salad and pesto rice at the same plate and somehow makes it cohere.

Not everything sticks the landing. The flatbreads are really more fried focaccia, toppings sliding off a base loaded with stracciatella that doesn't bake through cleanly. Bagels, on the other hand, are solid, particularly the salmon and the cream cheese versions.

Dessert is where the theme pays off best. The Royal Ube pairs ube with green matcha cream and coconut milk, matcha's grassy edge giving way slowly to ube's sweetness. It looks like a trick and tastes like one too, in the good sense.

Joker isn't trying to be a straightforward Bandra brunch spot. It's betting that Mumbai diners are up for a menu that keeps changing its mind mid-meal, and on this early evidence, that bet mostly pays off.
