Twenty-four days. That's how long it took Bethlehem Kudumba Unit to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, according to trade figures reported by 123telugu. The Girish AD-directed film has reportedly pulled in around ₹305 crore worldwide, edging past Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra's own benchmark of roughly ₹302 crore.

What's got the trade talking isn't just the number, it's the clock. Lokah needed about 40 days to touch ₹300 crore. BKU got there in 24, which is not a small gap when you're talking about a Malayalam release competing with the kind of pan-India buzz Lokah generated.

And the film hasn't slowed down. Fourth week into its run, footfalls in Kerala and overseas markets are reportedly still healthy, which is unusual for anything this deep into its theatrical life. If that holds, the lifetime total climbs further before anyone even starts talking about a plateau.

The cast carries a lot of the weight here. Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju lead, backed by a supporting bench that includes Sangeeth Prathap, Vinay Forrt, Suresh Krishna, Bindu Panicker, Srinda, Roshan Shanavas and Meenakshy Raveendran. Girish AD, who's built a reputation for grounded, small-town comedy-drama, directs. The music comes from Vishnu Vijay, the camera work from Ajmal Sabu, and Akash Joseph Varghese handles the edit.

The producers' names probably matter as much as the box office arithmetic. Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran back the film under Bhavana Studios, a combination that's become something close to a stamp of quality in Malayalam cinema over the past few years. None of them are strangers to films that punch well above their budget.

For an industry that's spent the last two years watching Malayalam cinema chip away at the assumption that only Telugu and Hindi films can post these numbers, BKU crossing Lokah is the kind of record that changes conversations at the next producers' meet. Lokah had already proven a Malayalam original could travel. BKU is now proving it can travel faster.

Whether the film keeps climbing or settles here depends on how the next two weeks play out, especially with fresh releases due to test its hold on screens. But at 24 days and still counting, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has already done what it needed to do. It's rewritten the top of the chart, and for now, nobody else in Malayalam cinema is close.
