On a podcast this week, Paltrow revisited the Seven set, the broken engagement and why she still calls Pitt a friend three decades later.
Gwyneth Paltrow has gone back to 1994, and the internet is here for it.
On the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Paltrow said she and Brad Pitt clicked the moment they met on the set of Seven. "I got cast in the movie with Brad, and I met him on set, and we had kind of a love at first sight thing," she said, according to Extra TV. "It was pretty awesome. It was really fun. He was so beautiful, and I think he was 31 and I was 22."
At the time, Pitt already had Thelma & Louise, Legends of the Fall and Interview with the Vampire behind him. Paltrow was just arriving. That mismatch in fame, she said, was strange to live through in real time. "I had movies coming out, so I was sort of getting famous on my own, and I was famous as his girlfriend," she said.
She'd get her own marquee moment soon enough, winning the Best Actress Oscar for Shakespeare in Love in 1999. But that was still ahead of her when she and Pitt got engaged, a relationship that ran three years before it ended in 1997.
Why it ended, in her telling, wasn't dramatic. "We didn't get married. I was just young, and we were working all over different parts of the world," Paltrow said. The breakup still stung, and she's candid about carrying it publicly. "I was so bummed when we broke up, and I think that the press aspect and all that makes it feel larger than life in a way," she said. "You have to carry this faux cultural importance piece and it's this extra burden and this extra almost shame that it didn't work out. It was hard."
She doesn't frame it as regret now, though. "I think there was an aspect of it that was very heady. I was very young, and he was this beautiful movie star. But he's a great guy, and I love him to this day. He's a friend."
The relationship had its own footnotes that have circulated for years, per Bollywood Shaadis. Pitt reportedly confronted Harvey Weinstein after Paltrow, then filming Emma for Weinstein's company, told him about an uncomfortable encounter with the producer. And when Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for 12 Monkeys in 1996, he thanked her from the stage as "the love o' my life."
Both of them moved on in ways that are well documented. Pitt married Jennifer Aniston, split in 2005, then married Angelina Jolie in 2014, split in 2016, and finally closed out that divorce in 2024. Paltrow married Chris Martin in 2002, separated in 2016, and is now married to producer Brad Falchuk.
None of that appears to have soured how she talks about the Seven years. What's less clear is whether Pitt has anything to add. He hasn't responded to the podcast episode, and given how guarded he tends to be about his old relationships, he may not.
