With a week left before release, Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has collected roughly $550,000 in North American advance bookings, well short of where Coolie stood at the same point en route to a $3 million opening.
Seven days out from its premieres, Jailer 2 is not tracking anywhere close to the pace Coolie set earlier this year. Track Tollywood reported the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel has pulled in around $550,000 in North American advance bookings so far, a number that looks modest next to what Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie had banked at the identical point in its own run-up.
Coolie did not just do well. It went on to cross $3 million in North America, Canada included, for its premiere window, a figure Track Tollywood calls an all-time record for a Kollywood release. That is the bar Jailer 2 is being measured against, fairly or not, and right now it is not clearing it.
Based on current momentum, the outlet projects Jailer 2 landing somewhere between $1.75 million and $2 million for its North American premieres. Respectable for a Tamil film overseas, sure. But it would still leave the sequel a full million dollars or more behind what Coolie managed, and there is no guarantee the trend even holds.
What is driving the gap is harder to pin down than the numbers themselves. Track Tollywood points to a mixed reaction to Jailer 2's promotional material as one factor dragging on ticket momentum, and notes this is not an isolated case, a few recent Kollywood sequels have seen similar drop-offs when trailers and songs did not land the way studios hoped. Whether that is actually what is happening with Jailer 2, or whether audiences are simply saving their money for premiere weekend itself, is something only the next seven days will settle.
It is worth remembering that Jailer, the 2023 original, was itself a sizeable hit, which is precisely why comparisons to Coolie feel loaded rather than incidental. Both films star Rajinikanth. Both arrived with franchise or event-film expectations. And both are being read by trade watchers as referendums on how much pull the superstar still has with the diaspora audience that shows up in force for advance shows.
The real test comes in the final stretch. Distributors typically see the sharpest spike in bookings in the last two or three days before a big Tamil release, especially once word spreads about promo shows or early reviews from premiere-night crowds in India. If Jailer 2 is going to close even part of the distance to Coolie's number, that is the window where it has to happen.
For now, the gap stands. Coolie set the template for what a Rajinikanth release can do overseas this year. Jailer 2 has a week to decide whether it is chasing that template or settling for a solid, if smaller, number of its own. Premiere-day collections, due next week, will tell the real story.
