Nayanthara’s big-budget fantasy sequel opens to a shocking ₹2 crore in India, with global totals below ₹3 crore. Competing releases Suriya’s Scene and Ramayana are outperforming it across markets.
Mookuthi Amman 2’s opening day numbers have rattled the Tamil film industry. The sequel, budgeted at over ₹100 crore and headlined by Nayanthara in her titular role as the divine protector, collected just over ₹2 crore gross in India on its first day. Worldwide totals, including overseas markets, fell short of ₹3 crore — figures that trade analysts are calling a ‘disastrous start’ for a film of this scale.
The performance is especially jarring given the original 2020 Mookuthi Amman, which was released directly on OTT and became a major hit with family audiences. That film was written and directed by RJ Balaji. The sequel, now directed by Sundar C with Venkat Raghavan as co-writer, carries the weight of expectations it may not be able to meet.
The cast includes Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Regina Cassandra, Duniya Vijay, Khushbu Sundar, and Sneha, while Hiphop Tamizha composed the music. Despite all these elements, the film failed to ignite interest on Day 1. Industry sources say the lack of momentum is particularly concerning outside Tamil Nadu, where the film’s reach remains limited.
Competing releases are making life harder. Suriya’s Scene has opened to strong numbers and continues to draw crowds across key markets. Meanwhile, Ramayana is dominating the festive season with robust collections and exceptional advance bookings. These two films are already shaping the Diwali box office narrative.
For Mookuthi Amman 2, recovery now depends entirely on word-of-mouth and footfall during the extended holiday period. A significant jump from Day 2 onward is essential if the film hopes to remain competitive. Without it, the path to profitability becomes increasingly narrow. The film’s best chance lies in strengthening its hold within Tamil Nadu, where sentiment and legacy might still pull it through.
But even there, the window is closing fast. The weekend will decide whether this sequel fades into obscurity or finds a way back. And right now, the odds aren’t in its favour.
