123telugu reported on Monday that Mookuthi Amman 2, the sequel to Nayanthara's 2020 devotional hit, is likely headed for the same Diwali release window as Ramayana, Nitesh Tiwari's big-ticket mythological drama starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash. If that holds up, it puts two very different scales of cinema on a collision course in Tamil Nadu, right when the market is at its most crowded.
Ramayana has been treated as the one release nobody would dare go up against this year. It's the kind of film studios build release calendars around, not into. So the idea that a regional devotional entertainer would plant its flag on the same date is the sort of move that gets trade watchers talking, and it's exactly why 123telugu flagged it as news rather than a footnote.
Mookuthi Amman 2 isn't a small film either, at least not by Tamil standards. The budget is pegged at Rs 100 crore, according to the report, a serious jump for a franchise that started as a modest family entertainer four years ago. Sundar C is back in the director's chair, Hiphop Tamizha is composing the music, and Ishari K. Ganesh is producing. That's a full-scale commercial package, not a quiet festive filler.
What it means, if the dates actually align, is a straight fight for Tamil Nadu screens during the one week in the year when every exhibitor wants a hit on every schedule. Ramayana carries the pan-India weight and the scale of a Nitesh Tiwari production with three major stars attached. Mookuthi Amman 2 carries home advantage, Nayanthara's pull with Tamil audiences, and a built-in fan base from the first film's success.
Neither side has made anything official. There's no confirmed date from either camp, and 123telugu's own report frames this as likely rather than locked in. Diwali windows shift constantly this close to the festival, and either production could still move to avoid a fight nobody strictly needs.
But if both films do land on the same Friday, it won't be the first time a Diwali release calendar has turned into a numbers game nobody wins outright. Trade will be watching screen counts long before either trailer drops.
