The devotional thriller needs to clear Rs 100 crore just to break even on its reported Rs 80 crore budget, and the weekend will tell if that's realistic.
The Vvaan: Force of the Forest isn't running away with the box office, but it isn't stalling either. The Tamannaah Bhatia and Siddharth Malhotra starrer added around Rs 2.93 crore net in India on its second day, according to Sacnilk figures cited by Telugu Filmibeat, with the day's final tally still being tracked as evening and night shows fill up.
That follows an opening day of Rs 8 crore net (Rs 9.60 crore gross) on Thursday, September 25, when the film released worldwide to what trade watchers are calling mixed reactions. Advance bookings for day two told a decent story on their own: 7,358 shows nationwide sold 1.78 lakh tickets for a combined Rs 4.03 crore, split across Delhi NCR (Rs 77.53 lakh), Maharashtra (Rs 61.43 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (Rs 33.21 lakh), Bihar (Rs 33.12 lakh) and Gujarat (Rs 30 lakh).
Occupancy through the afternoon sat at 21 percent across 3,350 tracked shows, with Delhi (736 shows), Mumbai (502), Ahmedabad (329), Kolkata (200), Surat (199) and Pune (192) carrying the bulk of the screen count. Analysts quoted by Filmibeat expect the Saturday total to land somewhere between Rs 7 crore and Rs 8 crore worldwide, which would put the two-day domestic-plus-overseas number at Rs 18-20 crore.
The numbers matter because the math behind them is unforgiving. The Vvaan is said to have cost around Rs 80 crore to make, and trade estimates put its breakeven point north of Rs 100 crore at the box office. Two days in, it's roughly a fifth of the way there, which is the kind of gap a film usually needs an extended weekend and strong word of mouth to close.
What's working in its favour right now is an empty calendar. There's no major Hindi tentpole crowding it out this week, and that's given The Vvaan room to hold screens it might otherwise have lost. Hanuman Ansh is being watched as the film most likely to eat into that space if it picks up steam.
The film brings together Balaji Telefilms, TVF Motion Pictures and 11:11 Productions, backed by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Arunabh Kumar and Niraj Kothari, with Sunil Grover, Manish Paul, Shweta Tiwari and Anup Soni rounding out the cast. Its music, spread across Vishal Mishra, Amit Trivedi, Tanishk Bagchi and Sam C.S., has been part of the promotional push that's kept Tamannaah and Siddharth on the circuit through the week, including a premiere that's already generating its own chatter online over the pairing.
Saturday and Sunday will decide whether the momentum builds into something closer to the Rs 100 crore mark, or whether The Vvaan settles into the kind of decent-not-decisive run its opening two days suggest.
