Six days in, The Vvaan is doing exactly what a film needs to do on a Wednesday: not fall off a cliff. Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia's film added Rs 3.50 crore to its tally, a 35 per cent drop from Day 5, pushing the running nett total to Rs 45.75 crore, according to trade estimates compiled by Pinkvilla.

That's a respectable hold for a film heading into its second week. Trade watchers now expect The Vvaan to close its opening week somewhere around Rs 47-48 crore nett, and cross the Rs 50 crore mark sometime over its second weekend, per the same tracking numbers.

Thursday should help. Gandhi Jayanti falls this week, and a midweek holiday usually means a bump for anything still playing in theatres, win or lose. The Vvaan is banking on exactly that.

But the runway isn't long. Ajay Devgn's Drishyam: The Conclusion opens this coming weekend, and early signs suggest it won't be a quiet release. Pinkvilla reported that the film sold 1.85 lakh tickets in national chains for its opening day alone, with two days still to go before release. That's the kind of advance movement that tends to eat into whatever else is running in multiplexes.

So the real test for The Vvaan isn't this Thursday. It's the following Friday, when it has to hold screens and footfalls against a franchise with a built-in audience and a title that's been in theatres' good books for two decades now.

Still, if the current trajectory holds, The Vvaan is on track to be called a hit, the kind of outcome that would have seemed unlikely a few months back when parts of the industry were busy writing obituaries for Hindi cinema at the box office. Pinkvilla's own tracking has pointed out the irony here: the doomposting was loudest right before a genuine turnaround, one that trade sources trace back to the release of Welcome to the Jungle roughly three months ago. Since then, theatrical business in Hindi cinema has looked healthier than it has in years, both in terms of how many films are actually releasing and how many of them are finding an audience.

Whether The Vvaan adds to that run or gets swallowed by Drishyam: The Conclusion's opening weekend will become clear soon enough. For now, it's holding its ground, one modest Wednesday at a time, with a crore count that keeps climbing and a Friday deadline that's closing in fast.
