Zobel Steps Into the Dark With ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ Film

Craig Zobel is stepping into the horror spotlight with Something Is Killing the Children, a live-action film adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera. The announcement came during Blumfest at New York Comic-Con, where Blumhouse laid out its 2027 slate. Zobel, a director known for his work on prestige television including Mare of Easttown and The Penguin, will helm the feature under the Blumhouse banner.

The project is being produced by Jason Blum through Blumhouse, alongside Stephen Christy and Tynion IV, who are producing for Boom! Studios, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Werther Dell’Edera will serve as co-producer, while Shaun Sutton, Ryan Turek, Adam Yoelin, and Mette Norkjaer are executive producers. The film is part of a broader franchise push: Blumhouse is simultaneously developing an adult animated series version of the story, which will be shepherded by Tynion IV.

First published in 2019, Something Is Killing the Children has become the most successful original horror comic since The Walking Dead, selling more than five million copies worldwide and being translated into over 20 languages across 14 countries. Its breakout spinoff, House of Slaughter, launched with over 500,000 copies sold — making it one of the top-selling original comic book debuts of the 21st century.
