Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has become the highest-grossing film in Kollywood history, raking in over 700 crores within just 13 days of release. The film now stands as the benchmark for commercial success in Tamil cinema this year.
This milestone comes after a year defined by both blockbuster momentum and consistent quality across genres. The industry’s resurgence began in earnest with Suriya’s Karuppu, which marked the first major hit of 2026. It was followed by Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s directorial debut DC, and Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons — all of which contributed to a sustained wave of box office energy.
The second half of the year saw a surge in content-driven films. Rishikanth’s Modha Rathiri, Soori’s Mandaadi, Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy, and Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa were all praised for their storytelling and execution. While Dorothy and Baththa didn’t meet initial expectations in terms of gross, they were deemed profitable and emotionally resonant, two qualities that have left lasting impressions on audiences.
